IN WHAT WAY DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT CHALLENGE FORM AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

In our film, The Suppressed, we went against the stereotypical assumption that the superhero would be a man, as seen in the majority of superhero films. We also decided on a female role for the antagonist to continue and enforce the power and strength of women in today’s society. an example of this is in the recent film 'wonder women'. This theme influenced the type of clothes that we chose for the roles. Our protagonist, Clary, was presented as dangerous and threatening throughout the whole film, even when she is vulnerable in the mental hospital (shown through the use of a white top to make her look innocent). the audience are still aware of her dangerous traits because of the type of shots and editing used. Therefore, her costume once she escapes from the mental hospital reflects her unpredictable traits, such as the tilted corridor scene and the red filter added on top of the mental break down scene. The antagonist, head of the Censor scheme, was presented in a formal suit to imply the empowerment and superiority of her role within the Government.
extra (thats not in the video above):
These are very important roles within the film as they portray power and strength, which typically is seen within male roles within the superhero film genre. Wonder Women was a very inspiring film that influence the way we used our female characters within our storyline. We chose specific outfits and appearance to present these women as being bold and driven, but not as far to complement the male gaze (this is explained further in the challenge page because I find this part of our movie to go against the stereotypical conventions).

The music typically in an action/adventure, superhero film is exciting and thrilling because of the mass of action. This is seen in all the superhero trailers I have analysed, such as Dr strange, Power Rangers and X-Men. However, along with the expectations of an exciting and heavy fast pace beat, we wanted to create a distorted and fragmented sound and we did this by using a lighter pitched track that would portray the metal insecurity of the character in the vulnerable and intense scenes. We used a section of a track by Stephan Scott that allowed us to begin the more sinister and confusing scenes, within the mental in institute. The track also inspired us to add whispers in creepy tones to represent the madness in Clary’s head and build upon the uncomfortable and suspense atmosphere within the audience.

The narrative of our film goes against the expectations of a superhero film as it is about a Government Scheme, Censor, has captured and suppressed all Dunamis (people with superpowers) in mental hospitals, where they take medication to suppress their powers and loss all memory of every having powers in the first place. This creates conflict towards the idea that all Doctors and Nurses are ‘Good’ as they use their medical knowledge to harm people and make them mental unstable. It also increases the complexities of our narrative and presents a unique perspective on the stereotypical superhero genre, where the superhero is there to save the day, but instead seen as a threat and made extinct through a Government scheme.
